Summery
Currently, the UK has five Reapers in operation in Afghanistan. They are remote controlled airplanes who have a striking capability using four hellfire rockets and two laser-guided bombs. This kind of remote technology is not only used in the army but by the UK police who used them for the V festival in Staffordshire in 2007 to feed images back to their control room. Remote controlled units also have their downside: pilots are afraid of losing their jobs and human right activists believe that this might lower the threshold for war. However, researcher suggest that the field will only expand and develop even further.
Opinion
I believe that replacing human lives is always a good thing when it comes to war. However, this kind of technology has not reached a level in which it can replace human judgement, responses and so on. That is why I think, the government should wait before using this kind of technology, because when used in military situations this can lead to collateral damage. I am also convinced that this, and any other kind of technology development, cannot be stopped. The smart thing to do is being involved, to have the ability, to oversee these kind of developments.
